<p>Congratulations to Team Pipeline2Paradise, who are the winners of the SHAKA Challenge with a total weight loss percentage of 7.53 % vs. Team Island Sports Media&#8217;s 6.28 %.</p>
<p>Team Pipeline2Paradise started the challenge with a total weight of 1281 lbs with a  total weight loss of 96.5 lbs.   Team Island Sports Media started with a total combined weight of 1473 lbs with a combined weight loss of 92.5 lbs.</p>
<p>This  past 6 weeks flew by really fast and proves to me that a few weeks of proper nutrition and exercise can go a long way.  I only dropped 16.5 pounds but I lost inches on my waist and also dropped from a 3XL t-shirt to a XL t-shirt.<span id="more-1553"></span></p>
<p>This challenge really put life into prospective for me.  Prior to this challenge, I was really sluggish and tired but now I have more energy than ever before.  I dialed in my motive for staying healthy and my fire is now lit.  Motive you ask?  The motive is being healthy and alive to see my daughter grow up.</p>
<p>The challenge has thought me a few things in life.  One of the lessons learned is that your true friends really do support you and encourage you to be healthy.  They also notice the changes your body is  going through.  Another lesson learned has to do with goals.  Set your goals and strive to achieve it. Whether it is to lose weight or be successful in business, you must have goals.  Write down your goals and strive to achieve it everyday.   As Terry Fator (the famous Las Vegas entertainer) once told me, continue striving for your dreams because if you don&#8217;t, your dream will die.</p>
<p>And if you ask me this question;  What is the most important lesson learned in the past 6 weeks?  I have to say this, <span style="text-decoration: underline;">believe in yourself.</span> Anything is possible, if you just believe.</p>

<p><em>Wow what a tough 6 weeks. I weighed in at 185lbs tonight. That&#8217;s a total weight loss of 15lbs. I haven&#8217;t been this light for at least 5 years. Although the challenge is over, my goal has not been met. So I will continue the diet and cardio after this Sunday and I will send you an updated pic when I hit my goal of 175. Thank you ISM and Pipeline2Paradise for helping me to Staying Healthy And Keeping Alive!</em></p>

<p>Anyway, this  journey to a healthier life has just begun for me.  This six weeks brought me closer to my old friends and made me new ones too.  Win or lose, this challenge made me realize the importance of staying healthy and keeping alive.</p>

<p><strong>Kim</strong> – Island Sports Media supporter: Starting weight is 112lbs. Kim’s goal is to get rid of her baby fat and have a flat stomach after having three kids.<br />
Week 1:  Kim has attempted to quit smoking and cut down on her soda.  She had been working out at the gym.  No change in weight this week.<br />
Week 2:  No weight change. 112 lbs.<br />
Week 3:  No weight change. 112 lbs.<br />
Week 4:  Okay…as of 06-24-10, Kim finally weighed herself. She hasn’t weighed herself since the start of the challenge.  She is now 100 lbs.  A lost of 12 lbs. since the beginning of the challenge.    Kim went from a snugg size 3 jeans to a comfortable size 1 jeans.<br />
Week 5:  100 lbs.<br />
Week 6: 100 lbs.</p>
<p>Final Weight: 100 lbs.<br />
Total loss: 12 lbs.</p>
<p>Kim has been working out hard, doing Zumba, Yoga, Boot Camp.  She sometimes work out twice a day. She also drinks her green smoothies.</p>

<p>It is almost summer again and time to get back into that swimsuit, tank top, or whatever your summer attire is.  This is also another round for the SHAKA Challenge which stands for Staying Healthy and Keeping Alive.  The challenge begins May 24, 2010, ends on July 4, 2010.<span id="more-1498"></span></p>
<p>Several years ago, Pipeline2Paradise.com came up with this challenge and went up against the Las Vegas Hawaiian media entities and then against family.  This time, Island Sports Media called out Pu`ukani of Pipeline2Paradise.com and the challenge was on.</p>
<p>If you are like me, I love food especially “local” Hawaiian food.  I frequently can be found at Oahu’s Hawaiian Restaurant eating my favorite plate lunch of Mochi Chicken and Katsu Combo plate or at Kimo’s Island BBQ and Teriyaki in Coupeville, WA eating a full rack of ribs.    The result of this was an increase in my waist size and pounds, a lot of pounds.   This lead to being sluggish and tired all the time, not to mention severely out of shape and unhealthy.</p>
<p>Rewind about 5 years, during this time I was working out 5 to 6 times a week and actually watching my diet.  I consumed 6 meals a day and was around 220lbs and pretty lean.  The doctor scared me with a diagnosis of fatty liver disease and I thought I was going to die, I probably will eventually…LOL.   Anyway, I was working out, training Aikido and Kempo all at the same time.     Now, rewind a few years earlier in college, my friends and I lived in the weight room.  We were addicted to lifting weights.  You probably could call us non-competitive bodybuilders. I would see myself in the gym 6 days a week, twice a day and conscious of what I ate.   However, often times the strict diet was detrimental to me. I would often fall of the bandwagon and gain weight eating foods I missed, only to have to lose it again.  But, my workouts always continued.</p>
<p>Okay back to 2010, I am now 293lbs which is close to the highest I ever been. At one point, I was over 300lbs.  I did some soul searching if you call it that but I attribute this weight gain to being busy working, trying to put together a magazine, and also running a photography company.  I am so busying doing work that I neglected my diet and my workouts.   Believe it or not, I actually love working out but I was constantly tired.  But wait, there is another factor in this equation, back in the early 2000’s my co-worker was killed on-duty and I had to notify his family of the death.  This affected me more than anyone will ever know. I never really told anyone of the pain it caused me to see his family so distraught.   I turned to food, photography, and martial arts to get me thought all that mess. I had to escape reality to forget everything.   But, I quickly gained weight only to lose it and gain it back.  Now, that my mind became clear, I was stuck in a rut of eating those comfort foods of home…Hawaii.</p>
<p>At the end of April 2010, I hurt my left quadriceps and knee while bowling.   Yes, bowling and for those of you who know me, I was once a bowler in my younger days.  I was also getting winded walking up stairs and starting to get occasional chest pains.   This made me realize that enough was enough and I needed to re-prioritize my life.   I love my daughter more than anyone in this world and want to see her grow up.   Oh yeah, this may sound nuts but I also had a visit from my guardian angel (friend’s facebook posts) and led me to a bible.   This inspired me to watch videos of church sermons and also read the bible.  For those of you, that know me…I have never gone to church or read the bible so this was strange to me to be enjoying those videos.   LIVE the life you love, LOVE the life you live&#8221; One world, One God, One life, One love!</p>
<p>In college, I used to work out to look good for the ladies.  Now, I could care less what people think of me since I got no one to impress.  Once in my life, I made this decision to do this for me.</p>
<p>So, with this decision in mind…I called Pu`ukani of Pipeline2Paradise.com and made the challenge.   From that phone call, the SHAKA Challenge was on!</p>
<p>The SHAKA Challenge is a 6 week Challenge with the winning team to be determined by the most percentage weight loss as a team.   The winning team will receive t-shirts from Kaduku Clothing and Kimo’s Island BBQ and Teriyaki, also downloads from IslandBeats.com, and music CDs…with hopefully more prizes to come.</p>
<p>Yes, I know we have skinny people on the team…Kim and Tony.  But, this is a team effort. I purposely wanted them on our team. This gives the rest of us an incentive to work that much harder in the gym.</p>

<p><strong>Kim</strong> – Island Sports Media supporter: Starting weight is 112lbs. Kim’s goal is to get rid of her baby fat and have a flat stomach after having three kids.</p>
<p>Week 1:  Kim has attempted to quit smoking and cut down on her soda.  She had been working out at the gym.  No change in weight this week.<br />
Week 2:  No weight change. 112 lbs.<br />
Week 3:  No weight change. 112 lbs.<br />
Week 4:  Okay&#8230;as of 06-24-10, Kim finally weighed herself. She hasn&#8217;t weighed herself since the start of the challenge.  She is now 100 lbs.  A lost of 12 lbs. since the beginning of the challenge.    Kim went from a snugg size 3 jeans to a comfortable size 1 jeans.<br />
Week 5:  100 lbs.<br />
Week 6: 100 lbs.</p>
<p>Final Weight: 100 lbs.<br />
Total loss: 12 lbs.</p>
<p>Kim has been working out hard, doing Zumba, Yoga, Boot Camp.  She sometimes work out twice a day. She also drinks her green smoothies.</p>

<p>Week 5 is coming to an end. Sorry, i forgot to write a recap for week 4. This week, I have been in the gym everyday and sometimes twice a day doing cardio exercises. This past week, I jumped out of my comfort zone and tried Yoga. It was kind of comical attempting all those exercises but it was fun. The other day, I tried the Boxing Boot Camp at 24 Hour Fitness. I thought it was easy but I was wrong. I made it through the hour but I was so uncoordinated, I had to laugh at myself. Our trainer Eric put on a good class and I think it&#8217;s going to be a regular class for me.</p>
<p>This week, I dropped some weight but this time it was muscle weight. I wasn&#8217;t eating enough so I was told to increase my calories. It is hard for me to get the concept of eating more to lose weight. As hard as it is to believe, it is true. Years back, I had a nutritionist and trainer who had me eating a lot and I lost weight.</p>
<p>Anyway, I want to say good job to Kimo Slate of Kimo&#8217;s Island BBQ and Teriyaki in Coupeville, WA, who is working hard on his diet. Kimo lost a total of 26 pounds since the challenge started. He told me that his shorts are starting to fall off and his legs don&#8217;t hurt as much during the long days at work. Keep up the good work, Kimo!!!</p>
<p>To all of Team ISM and supporters, I am proud of you guys and keep up the good work. This challenge is for all of you. One thing, I want you to remember is to take care of your number one priorities you and your Ohana (family), kids, boyfriend, girlfriend, wife, husband, or all of the above for some. By keeping healthy, you will be able to take care of them for a long time. Just remember, you need to take care of yourself before you can take care of others. But also make time for them too!</p>

<p>This is the end of week 3 and beginning of Week 4. This was another hard week for me. I didn&#8217;t miss a workout but I did eat and drink some. Anyway, this next three weeks is crunch time. I told myself, there will be no distractions and not going out to eat at any Hawaiian Restaurants&#8230;even if it&#8217;s just chicken salad. Yep, I said it. I am not going to eat or step foot in a Hawaiian Restaurant for the next three weeks.</p>
<p>Braddah Guy turned me and Puukani on to alkaline water, which suppose to be good for your body. Anyway, I am trying it. Oh yeah, I also wanted to try coconut water but I was told it is on a global shortage&#8230;so I guess I gotta wait.</p>

<p>Okay, this is the end of week 2. This was a tough week for me since on Friday we had the Hawaiian BBQ event and I also visited Kimo&#8217;s Island BBQ and Teriyaki. I did break my diet and ate but I also put in extra cardio.</p>
<p>Over the weekend, I also felt a little down. Burnt out maybe. I was tired and lost all of my focus. I called my teammates in an attempt to get back on track but it took a call from Pu&#8217;ukani of Pipeline2Paradise that put me back on track. He told me to find a motive for getting back in shape. Well, I thought about it&#8230;.my motive is my health and my daughter. I want to live to see my kid grow up so staying healthy is a must.</p>

<p>I am now more focused than ever before. I am on track, losing one to two pounds per week. Anything more, is not healthy and the chance of gaining it back is higher. So, I am sticking to what my trainer Eric is telling me&#8230;plus I get to eat. The staff at 24 hour Fitness Everett are awesome: Eric, Audrey, and Shaun have all been great. If you guys need a gym membership go see either Audrey or Shaun&#8230;.(I&#8217;d go see Audrey, she&#8217;s cuter. LOL..sorry Shaun, just telling the truth). And if you need a trainer, go see Eric. Eric has a lot of knowledge in weight loss through experience. He has been there, just like all of us in the challenge.</p>

<p>I started this challenge on February 15, 2008, weighing in at 269 lbs with my no-so high tech bathroom scale.  During the week, I ate mostly salads or whole wheat sandwiches for one or two meals a day.  But, had two parties this week for friends moving so I just couldn&#8217;t pass up or be rude. So, I decided to eat. On Friday&#8217;s party, I ate grilled Salmon, teri-beef, and spam with cabbage.  I ate little rice with my 4 pieces of salmon. </p>
<p>Then on Sunday, I decided to weigh myself since it was a little or one week since I started this. Well this scale of mine was kind of off.  My first weigh in was 259 lbs. I couldn&#8217;t believe it so I tried again and again&#8230;it went like this:  259, 269, 255, 259.  So, I guess my unofficial weight is 260lbs, the average of the 4 weigh inns&#8230;.LOL.  It cracks me up but at least, I know I&#8217;m losing weight. Since, the scale wouldn&#8217;t have ever registered in the 250 lbs before the Shaka Challenge.</p>
<p>After that, my friend was leaving for Texas so we had coffee and some cheese cake.  I couldn&#8217;t be rude so I ate my share of two or maybe three pieces.   I guess that&#8217;s plus 5 pounds for the cheesecake&#8230;&#8230;so it&#8217;s 255 lbs now????</p>

That&#8217;s measured uncooked. So, you guys know how much rice that is. </p>
<p> Growing up in the islands, I was raised eating rice three times a day.  I was always the clean up guy at the dinner table.  For me, being a little heavy is nothing new.  Hopefully, that will change soon&#8230;Until next time, SHAKA braddahs.</p>

<p>I started my weigh loss challenge officially or maybe unofficially, the beginning of January.  I joined in on a weigh loss challenge at my work.   But&#8230;.like most of you island transplants on the mainland know, that it&#8217;s hard to go on a diet when you visit Hawai&#8217;i. </p>
<p>Well for me, this was the case. I was going to Hawai&#8217;i for the Pro Bowl during the first week in February.   I know know&#8230;.but I miss all that local food. I miss going to Zippy&#8217;s and the Coco puffs from Liliha Bakery.  So, now that my visit to Hawai&#8217;i is out of the way.  I&#8217;m ready for my challenge. I&#8217;m still involved with my weigh loss challenge at work but I also decided to join braddah Pu&#8217;ukani of Pipeline2Paradise Radio and the rest of the crew for the SHAKA Challenge (<strong>S</strong>taying <strong>H</strong>ealty and <strong>K</strong>eeping <strong>A</strong>live).   </p>
