Bill Amis dunks it home!The ‘Bows win the consolation title over Pepperdine in the 45th Annual Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic.  After a very physical back-and-forth game, Hawai`i began pulling away from Pepperdine at the 14:04 mark.  The ‘Bows (8-4) led by as much as 14 points before beating Pepperdine (2-13), 78-70.  Read more

University of Hawai`i Warrior defensive lineman David Veikune was named the Island Sports Media Athlete of the Year today at Tiki’s Grill and Bar. The award is given to an athlete who exhibits excellent qualities both on and off the field.  Everything from family, school, and excellent consistent play on the field is considered.  The goal of the award is to motivate and empower the youth of the islands to achieve their best at whatever they do.  The award is open to any athlete with an island connection whether from Hawai`i, the Polynesian Islands, or the mainland.

OUTRIGGER HOTELS RAINBOW CLASSIC TIPS OFF

Roderick Flemings dunks!The 45th Annual Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic began today at the Stan Sheriff Center.  The eight team tournament runs through December 30th.  Hawai`i (6-4) suffered a disappointing opening round loss to former WAC foe Colorado State (4-8), 74-58.  They are now delegated to the consolation bracket and will face George Washington on Monday at 7:30 p.m.  Colorado State faces Vermont in the semi-final match on Monday at 11 a.m.  Vermont beat George Washington in the earlier game today, 83-72.

NOTRE DAME JUMPS ON HAWAI`I, 49-21

Alexander escapes the rushJunk!  That was what my 10-year son said after I asked him what he thought of the game.  Junk it was.  Nothing went right for the Warriors but that was because the Fighting Irish played very well.  Greg Alexander was constantly running from the Notre Dame pass rush as he couldn’t find open receivers.  The Notre Dame offense ran smoothly as the play calling was excellent.  Hmm, maybe Coach Charlie Weiss should always call the plays from the coach’s box.

The Rainbow Wahine basketball team held on to win last night against the Washington State Cougars.  The Wahine jumped out to an early lead as they shot 44.4% to the Cougars 17.9% in the first-half.  The Wahine had a comfortable lead, 31-16.  Read more

HAWAI`I HANDLES CHICAGO STATE, 85-75

Brandon Adams blocks a shotAlthough the Hawai`i Rainbow Warriors basketball team started out slow this season with two opening losses, they have regrouped and have won their last 5 out of 6 games.  Monday night they played Chicago State at the Stan Sheriff Center and took an early lead over the Cougars that they couldn’t overcome.  Hawai`i prevailed 85-75 as they improved their season record to 5-3.  The Cougars couldn’t make a shot to save themselves in the first half as they shot only 23.3% to the Rainbow Warriors’ 46.9%.  At the half, Hawai`i led 44-22.
