Aloha Prep Bowl Recap by Rand the Man
December 18, 2009
By Randall “Rand the Man” Miyamoto
A great collection of soon to be stars, as well as some athletes who probably played their last game on the Aloha Stadium turf came together in the 2nd annual Aloha Prep Bowl on December 12, 2009.
A small but spirited crowd came out to support the Hawaii/Polynesia All-Stars vs. their Mainland opponents who were comprised of athletes from Chicago, New York, Texas, Ohio, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Florida.
Speed was the name of the game, along with size and power. This makes the College/Pro game a far cry from the days of the Single Wing and “The Student Body Right!”
Impressive performances by Sharrif Floyd, 6′ 4″ 320 lb. OT out of George Washington HS with schools such as Penn State, Ohio St and Florida showing interest in him.
Deuce Coon, 6′ 0″ 180 lb. speed burner from the Bayou State impressed scouts and fans with his blazing speed and soft hands.
My favorite player that caught my eye was Lyden Trail, a 6’7′ 220 lb defensive end from Booker T Washington HS in Florida. Trail created havoc in the Hawaii backfield all night
The Hawaii team was also well represented by good performances by ISM HS Athlete of the Year, VJ Fehoko (undecided), Kona Schenke (BYU) and slot/wide-out UH bound, Samson Anguay.
Other impressive players to watch were Ricky Heimuli 6′ 4′ 294 lb DL from Utah and LB Maka Unufe 6′ 2″ 240 lb of Provo, Utah.
The final score 26- 6 was not indicative of the hard play by both squads. The talent and the goodwill bonding was something that I was impressed with.
One of the sponsors of the game, Richard McGuinness from Sports Link Mgt Group, raved about the quality of players and how they also conducted themselves on the practice field during the week.
Truly a game that was enjoyed by all, and many thanks to Herbert Kaopua (HUB) and his Aloha Prep Bowl committee for showcasing the best of the best high School players from Hawaii, Samoa, and the Mainland.
