Nikon D3 – 25600 Noise Test
March 2, 2008
By Steve Kajihiro
Last night, we were at a basketball game and my friend Jeff asked me to shoot at test shot with my Nikon D3 at 25600 ISO. Here it is. The first shot is the original. I just made it to 4X6 at 72 dpi. The next photo was cropped 4X6 at 72 dpi with about 50% crop, the last shot on the botom was tight crop to show the close up noise. I did not do anything with these photos. I shot this at ISO 25600, f/6.3, at 1/500 sec. at 200mm.

Steve, Thanks for posting these images. It is nice to finally see something from a production D3 body that is not controlled Nikon USA. Impressive indeed. I am not entirely sure that this ISO setting would be useful in a print media type situation however with that said, I think that web publishers will be overjoyed with the ability to publish correctly exposed, professionally taken images in low light. Viva the D3!!! (THIS COMING FROM A CANON GUY:0)
Thanks Jeff,
I will try printing the photo out in an 8X10, so we can see what it looks like in print. That almost looks better than ISO 1600 on my D2H.
Yep…D3!! is right….Nikon really came through this time.

Wow!! Nice camera. but my Nikon Cool Pix 4600 is a better camera I think…
Hi Glenn,
Thanks your comments. I am very glad you like your camera. and I am sure it does the job for you.
Aloha,
Steve
if i wasnt so invested in Canon Glass, as well as having 2 1D bodies, i’d go for a D3. LOL. does seem nice to have FF @ 9fps.
The Canon 5D Mark II would blow away the Nikon D3 “noise” but not the FPS
