University of Hawai`i Warrior defensive lineman David Veikune was named the Island Sports Media Athlete of the Year today at Tiki’s Grill and Bar. The award is given to an athlete who exhibits excellent qualities both on and off the field. Everything from family, school, and excellent consistent play on the field is considered. The goal of the award is to motivate and empower the youth of the islands to achieve their best at whatever they do. The award is open to any athlete with an island connection whether from Hawai`i, the Polynesian Islands, or the mainland.
David Veikune was selected for his utmost character, intelligence, and of course great athletic skills. The Veikune family is originally from Alaska. After a couple of moves, they moved to Hawai`i when David was a junior in high school. David graduated from Campbell High School and was recruited by the University of Colorado. David returned to Hawai`i in 2006 and began playing for the Warriors. On his experience attending a mainland school then coming back home, David said, “Beautiful campuses and facilities cannot compare to playing in front of your family and friends at Aloha Stadium…” I couldn’t have said it any better. Well said, David! Island Sports Media would like to thank everyone who attended the award presentation. Thanks to Rowland Fujii (www.SayItWithKoa.com) who created the one-of-a-kind trophy; Michael Sullivan (HI-5 Printing) who created the brochure; Tiki’s Grill and Bar for the hospitality; Gay Shinbara (Outrigger Hotels) for her support; and Scott Komatsu, David “Big Wave Dave” Shinbara, and the rest of the Sports Hawaii members for their support. Thank you to Tave and Sheila, David Veikune’s parents, for sharing David with all of us through the years. Congratulations to David Veikune! Thank you for the many exciting moments you have provided us and good luck in your quest to the next level! Here are some photos of the event taken by ISM photographer Alan Kang.
